Excalibur was the legendary sword of King Arthur of England. It was first mentioned in literature about the year 1200. Stories differed over time, but typically involved the young king-to-be pulling the sword from a stone (or anvil or lake).

What made this act so extraordinary? The wizard Merlin had proclaimed that only the "true king," the heir to the throne, could pull the sword from the stone. Others had tried and failed.

This story has been recreated many times in literature, film, and cartoons. One notable example is the animated Disney film The Sword in the Stone from 1963.

1. Begin the sword in stone outline by drawing the blade of the sword, partially hidden in the stone. Use curved lines to sketch the sides of the blade, and a short line to connect them at the bottom.

Then, Use a long curved line to enclose the wavy, triangular shape of the stone.

2. Draw a curved line across the top of the rock to give it dimension - a flat top surface. Then, draw the crossguard of the sword.

Use curved lines to draw the base of the blade and the triangular top of the cross guard. Extend pairs of straight lines in both directions.

Then, enclose the ends of the cross guard by using curved lines to form circular shapes. Finally, draw a straight line down the center of the sword to indicate the fuller or ridge.

3. Next, draw the grip and pommel of the sword. Draw a circle within a circle to form the pommel. Connect it to the crossguard using a pair of straight lines, enclosing the grip.

Band the grip with diagonal curved lines. Sketch a small circle within each end of the crossguard, and a double-pointed teardrop shape in the center.

4. Detail and texture the stone, erasing as needed. Use curved lines to contour the rock. Then, draw tufts of grass at its base, using curved lines that meet at sharp points.

5. Draw more tufts of grass around the base of the stone, again using curved lines that meet at points. Begin sketching the roots of a tree using overlapping curved lines.

6. Use curved lines to sketch the trunk of the gnarled tree. Notice how the lines overlap. Then, use a series of short curved lines to sketch the cloudlike crown of the tree.

7. Continue sketching the leafy crown of the tree. Use a series of curved lines to outline the edge of the crown and detail within it.

8. Texture the trunk of the tree with curved lines. Then, draw a long curved line behind the stone to form the ground or horizon line.

Draw another curved line above it, between the tree and the sword. Finally, draw a few leaves falling from the tree. Use curved lines for the leaf veins and for the edges of the leaves.

9. Complete your sword in stone outline by completing the mountains in the distance. Use curved lines that meet at points to form the mountains and additional curved lines to texture them.
